Why use stone for your splashback surface?

Stone splashbacks have many added benefits in the home, especially in the kitchen.
  • Stone is low maintenance, as it is easy to clean. The same way you would clean your benchtops is the method you would apply to your stone splashback surface.

  • Stone splashbacks are grout free surfaces, unlike tiles, it is easier to clean as you do not have to clean grouting lines.

  • Stone splashbacks when placed behind the sink are a great way to waterproof and protect the area directly behind the sink.

  • If using stone for your benchtop, you can promote consistency through having the same stone material feature as the splashback. It looks stylish and elevates design continuity.

  • A qualified stonemason can guide you on the material to use and advise you of the technical guideline for placing stone behind cooktops (ie. ensure gas and/or electric clearances).

  • Your stonemason can install the splashback on the same day as they install your benchtops. This reduces the time it takes to construct your kitchen. It also means you are dealing with less tradespeople to get the job done - which can be a peace of mind!

Cancer does not discriminate

Earlier on last week the team at Granite Planet were going about our normal operations, when two ladies walked in campaigning about the Pink Ribbon initiative through NBCF.

What is NBCF? NBCF stands for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. "In 1994, when NBCF was founded, 30 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer lost their battle. In less than 20 years, through research, that percentage has halved" - Carole Renouf.

Source: http://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/health/i-found-a-lump-on-my-honeymoon/story-fneuzlbd-1226465363466

The foundation's ultimate goal is to eliminate all deaths caused by breast cancer by 2030. To achieve this goal the foundation needs donations to feed research and help prevent/treat breast cancer. Early detection is key to treating cancer and by creating awareness through funded research it will contribute in the plight of saving lives.

A PERSONAL ACCOUNT - Granite Planet PR Marketing Manager
Cancer does not discriminate - young, old, gender or race. Sitting with my 70 year old aunty in a hospital waiting room with fellow cancer patients and waiting for her radiation session proved that to me. At 70 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She was proactive and sought relevant treatment to help get through the illness. Research and treatment has come so far and my aunty was a survivor through early detection and by receiving the right treatment to help her particular case. For others this may not be the case...

There is more to lighting than just light…

A growing trend is the use of lighting and how it can add character to an already stunning kitchen.

What do I mean by this?

A controlled lighting system offers different shade variations to set the mood, it pertains to energy saving methods and can enhance architectural elements through its lighting techniques.

Light is essential in all homes – too much or too little can change the perception of any space. This particular kitchen featured in this blog highlights the use of natural light during the day and at night, a sophisticated lighting system is utilised to create a different atmosphere.

Below is an example of the kitchen project Granite Planet worked on in East Malvern, Victoria. The design of this kitchen collaborates beautiful stone (Super White granite supplied by G-Lux and manufactured and installed by Granite Planet), gorgeous cabinetry, effective splashbacks and a cleverly designed lighting set-up.

Lighting elements is fast becoming an increasingly important component when selecting a kitchen scheme. It is offering more flexibility than ever envisioned in concept living and at Granite Planet we are loving it!

For more updates on what is trendy in kitchen design, stay tuned.

"R U OK? DAY": Tomorrow, September 12th, marks the very day.

Generally when we greet people it starts with "Hello, how are you?", but do you actually listen to that person's response?

The 'R U OK? Foundation', has set-up an "R U OK?Day" national campaign to help gauge other people's feelings and support those who may be struggling with their life. It is also a day to remind yourself about how you feel and whether you need support?

Tomorrow marks the very day. It's about re-enforcing the idea to ask those around you about whether they "are ok" and for you to listen out for a meaningful response, as to how they are really feeling. Whether it be your friends, family or colleagues, give it a go and make a difference. At Granite Planet, we will.

The foundation is there "to help create a world where all people connect...". For more information please see here:

Stone News: Introducing elegance from Silestone®...

Introducing the new suede sensual finish brought to you by Silestone®, into the Australian market.

Silsestone® have brought an advanced matte texture stone finish that is available for workspace surfaces and tiling. For example, in the kitchen.

This range is designed to combat stains, promote colour consistency, provide a soft texture, allow for easy maintenance and ensure maximum hygiene (ie as it contains a bacteriostatic property).

What is currently available?

The initial colour selection for Australian consumers consists of Cemento Spa, Blanco Capri, Amazon, Blanco Zeus, Tigris Sand, Lagoon and Lyra.

The stone is man-made and is composed of natural quartz materials.

What excites Granite Planet about this range?

1. With the recent introduction of concrete benchtops in the home (kitchen), the "Cemento Spa" is an alternative option to use in your home for a concrete/cement like appearance and texture.

2. There are light stone options that look like natural stone, which possess the properties of reconstituted stone, with the added benefit of reflecting strength and a natural look. Ideal for use in high traffic areas.

Overlaying your existing benchtop with stone

Affordable stone benchtops

Planning a kitchen makeover? Do you have existing laminate benchtops in your kitchen?

Customers have been requesting that Granite Planet replace their existing benchtops and in turn, give their kitchen a much needed facelift.

At Granite Planet, we have recommended to these customers to keep their existing laminate benchtops with the intention to resurface this top by placing stone directly on the laminate.
Photo: "A green laminate kitchen that wasn't envied".
Why this option?

1. Cheaper and more cost effective if planning a budget kitchen renovation
2. Gives your kitchen a finer finish with the application of stone
3. Adds to your home's market value
4. Allows for the laminate to be cut back / trimmed and a nice modern edge to be applied (ie. replace an out-dated edge style). Note: The laminate will not be visible to the eye with this method
5. Job turnaround is much quicker with a shorter process
6. Less mess and room for error.

Savings to consider when getting a quote:

  • Use the laminate as a substrate (to support the stone)
  • Keep your current cabinetry, splashbacks and tiling etc
  • Option to keep existing appliances or changeover to modern appliances (with the same sizing).
Note: A plumber and electrician will be required to disconnect and reconnect as necessary
  • Durable material application.
Want to find out more? Feel free to contact a representative from Granite Planet today on 03 9587 3818. We will quote your job, check and measure, cut your stone and install your benchtops to your satisfaction.

Happy renovating.

White on white... ongoing trend in kitchen design

As colourful kitchens are an increasing trend... it is important for me to highlight just how popular white kitchens are in today's market. My customers are exposed to a great range of natural and reconstituted stone, featuring an abundance of white surface options to use throughout the home interior. With the recent introduction from stone suppliers of the natural quartz palettes, the "white" kitchen selection continues to trend.

Stone by Granite Planet.

Why is "white" an attractive choice?

- It creates vibrancy and an illusion of space by adding light and brightness to the kitchen

- Creates opportunity by allowing homeowners to add accents of colour through objects, such as fruit bowls, artwork, crockery and stools. These objects can be moved and aid flexibility to set the current mood or theme

- It highlights fixtures

- It looks clean and is easy to maintain - hides a lot of wear and tear!

- Promotes a timeless design (safer option) when the years unfold and other design choices/fads become a thing of the past

- Marketable path to go down for resale value / re-selling appeal.

If ever in doubt about the colour scheme - seek a professional opinion. Whether it be that of an interior designer or a trades professional. This creates certainty, that your choice embraces the right blend and shade of white.

Request as many samples as you can, for all areas of the room that you are renovating.

Plan well and you will be able to enjoy the benefits and beauty of a white kitchen.

Choosing the right bar stool for your home

Bar stools contribute to the overall room design and can make or break the final look. Here are a few handy hints to look out for when choosing the right stools for your home.

Things to consider:

Price – Shop around in physical stores to “try before you buy” and then check prices online. Bar stools don’t necessarily have to break the bank; however the longevity of a stool can be based on how much you end up paying. Expect around $50 (basic quality) to $400 (deluxe boutique) for each bar stool.

Comfort – Think about whether your stool needs features that promote extra support. Consider back support or backless chairs with sturdy legs, four legs or a swivel base, leg rests and cushioning. Before you purchase a bar stool be sure to sit on the stool for a few minutes to ensure it is comfortable and safe.

Height – Each stool needs to be an appropriate height for the benchtop surface. Make sure if you are choosing a bar stool for an island bench, that you ensure the height is around 66cm (24”). There are online guides to tell you how high your stool should be depending on where it will be placed in the home.

Usability – Consider how often the stool will be used, for example daily use and/or just for special occasions (i.e. Parties / BBQ’s etc).

Location – Make sure the stools are suitable for the type of indoor or outdoor room it resides in.

Design – Stools need to match the overall décor/theme of the room (i.e. modern, country, classic and traditional etc). The stools should not overpower a room, but accentuate the style. If your room is simple and large, then you can go for a more top heavy looking design, instead of a slimline type of stool that would be better suited in a busier environment. Be sure to spread out each stool and not overcrowd the designated space.

Colour – Personally, I would take a colour from the existing canvas and then use this as a basis to choose your stools. This means, consider whether you want to match the existing benches, table and chairs. Alternatively, you may want to make a design statement and choose a standout colour for the chairs to pop and burst with personality. This approach can be risky, but if done correctly it can be appealing on the eye.

Maintenance – Before purchase, make sure the stools are easy to clean and think about usability of the chairs and how you will maintain a quality and clean appearance. Also if upholstered, ensure that it is of high quality and durability, to withstand material wear and tear.

Material – Here’s a list of the main types of bar stools you can find in today’s marketplace:

- Metal / Aluminum
- Fabric
- Wooden
- Plastic
- Vinyl
- Wicker &
- Leather.

Remember, stools are movable objects and can be replaced anytime. But, it’s always worth doing the research and weighing up the best options in order to maximise value and satisfaction.

Stone prices... how expensive is too expensive? Quality DOES matter.

How much should you really pay for a granite, marble and/or reconstituted quartz based stone project?

In recent months, as new competition has entered the market it has come to our attention that prospective customers are uncertain whether they should choose price, over quality.

Feedback has suggested that if the price is low (in most cases), this appears to be the deciding factor in why a client will choose a stonemason. Price reigns over a quality finish. However, does cost savings leave the consumer happy with the end result?

There are reasons for why a job may be priced too low. Competition in the industry is increasing and when the market becomes saturated, new comers are willing to drop their price and quality to win work.

What puts us (Granite Planet) at ease is that some of our recurring customers have returned with feedback on how they regret overlooking quality, when it came down to price. It is important to note that by ignoring quality, the costs in the long run may surpass the initial savings.

As an industry expert, it is easy to differentiate between the 'cowboys', 'hack-shops' and those who are 'reputable' in the market. As a consumer reading this blog, I strongly advise you to review your quotes and discuss what value is offered. Speak to the stonemason, do your research and see samples of their work. Value is not always in terms of monetary savings.

What you need to know when getting a cost for your stone surface:

Step one, is to call Granite Planet and speak to a representative if you need help in planning your stone project. We are friendly and are always available to help our prospective customers fill in gaps.

When requesting an accurate stone quotation, the estimator needs to understand your measurements, edge work style, edge thickness, material selected, the cutting list (under-mount / top-mount sinks), polished edges (seen edges) and any additional features, such as a waterfall end.

At Granite Planet we aim to be transparent in our pricing and discuss options that fit a client's desired budget. Our stone suppliers have a great relationship with us and when pricing material, we are flexible in offering saving options available, such as surplus (off-cut) stock.

We have many tips on how to save costs when designing your stone tops (kitchen benchtops & bathroom vanities etc), don't be shy to ask! For example, a way to bring down costs is to search for quality material that is not a full slab.

Planning a full kitchen renovation? Not just looking to replace your benchtops?

Here's a handy little calculator that you can use for inspiration when planning your kitchen. Costs are only an indication.

Taj Mahal: India's most popular tourist attraction, a marble mausoleum

There is an eerie enchantment about the creation of the Taj Mahal. A grief stricken husband, Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan illustrated his pain in one of the most extravagant and wondrous constructions dedicated to his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Mahal, died whilst giving birth to their 14th child, Gauhara Begum.

Located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India, the heritage listed Taj Mahal is every bit the majestic marvel, that was brought to life in the face of a loved one's passing. Both Mahal and Jahan are buried in a non-decorative plain crypt within an inner-chamber, as Islam forbids grave decorations.

Construction began in 1631, the Taj Mahal was based on the architectural styles of Islamic, Persian, Ottoman Turkish and Indian elements, using a team of professionals and a labour force of over 20,000 workers sourced from different regions of Northern India. Construction of the mausoleum, buildings and gardens were completed in 1653.

Teams of professionals included roles such as: architects, masons, sculptors, calligraphers, inlayers and builders. A special mention to Muhammad Hanif - a supervisor of the masons.

To transport the marble, a fifteen kilometre tamped-earth ramp was built as the primary mode. There were teams of oxen around 20 or 30, used to pull the blocks of marble. In order to raise the blocks for a desired placement, an "elaborate post-and-beam pulley system" was used. Over 1,000 elephants were also utilised to transport building materials from all over India and Asia.

The translucent white marble was brought in from Makrana, Rajasthan, jasper (black marble) from Punjab, jade and crystal from China, turquoise from Tibet, lapis lazuli from Afghanistan, sapphire from Sri Lanka and carnelian from Arabia. Together, twenty-eight types of precious and semi-precious stones were inlaid into the white marble of the Taj Mahal.

In 2013, what strikes me as amazing is a man's interpretation of love and the magnitude of such a construction project, without the modern technologies that we have today! The Taj Mahal is essential in construction history and an influential building that marvels the team here at Granite Planet.

G-Lux Showroom Spectacular – “rainbow of colour”

G-Lux opened their doors to the public on Monday, 25 February 2013, to showcase their designer showroom – featuring some of the finest natural stone and porcelain on offer in the Melbourne market!

Granite Planet proudly took part in this amazing showroom located on Balmain Road, in the chic suburb of Richmond.

The showroom greets the patron upon entry as an art gallery, with butterflies welcoming you before you set eyes on the intricacy of the ‘tiny men’ decorating the landscape of layered marble and limestone.

THE WALL - an impressive span of 13 metres

Granite Planet were privileged to help manufacture the visual wall display designed by architect, Rob Davidov. This display was drawn from the “raw inspiration” of the shipping containers and crates that granites, marbles, stones and porcelains arrive in from the “four corners of the world.” (Ref: G-Lux blog: And we’re in.. www.g-lux.com.au).

Granite Planet were also thrilled to craft the 20mm stone cabinet top supporting the stone samples available for clients, a display under-mount sink with a 40mm mitred splashback and many stone samples prepared for distribution to patrons.

Granite Planet believes that the must-see attraction in this dynamic showroom is designer Carlos Flores’ solid custom made Onyx seating. It is something that we, from the stone industry are still in awe over.

We are taking this opportunity to congratulate G-Lux on their innovation and new showroom – may it bring them the best of success!

Would you go ‘au naturel’?

The great debate in the stone industry is always a topic of relevance – natural stone or reconstituted stone (man-made). If you ask the artistic mind of a stonemason what stone they would prefer to work with – their answer is summarised as follows:

A symbol of beauty…

Natural is stunning, beautiful, characteristic and delicate. It is more porous and is not recommended in high intensity areas. Product types comprise of indoor and outdoor projects, such as island bench feature pieces, coffee tables, reception desks, BBQs and fireplaces.

A symbol of strength…

Reconstituted is non porous, strong and easy to maintain (highly resistant to defect). It looks beautiful and has been engineered to emulate natural stone, but its design personality is quite consistent throughout the material, as opposed to natural stone. Product types comprise of indoor projects, such a kitchen or bathroom.

A Granite Planet team member is always available to help identify the type of stone you want and what stone would best suit your purpose. Please feel free to send me any questions or stone topics you want covered.
